Historic Hangouts in Los Angeles

Whether you are visiting Los Angeles on business or pleasure, a nice cocktail may ease the stress of meetings, doing the tourist thing and finding the time to explore our big, exciting city. Luckily, there are tons of great places that are just a short cab ride away from our hotel.  Because L.A. is such an old town, many local bars and eateries have a vibrant history involving famous authors, Silver Screen stars and other important figures. Here are some of our very favorite spots with a key to Los Angeles’ past.

The Frolic Room in Hollywood is considered the last dive bar in the city. It originally opened as a speakeasy in the 1930’s, and eventually hosted some of Tinseltown’s elite players, including Howard Hughes s and other screen gems since it is attached to the iconic Pantages Theater. It is also the last place where Elizabeth Short, most widely known as the ill-fated Black Dahlia, was last seen alive. The interior dates back to 1963, the last year the bar was remodeled. It’s a great spot for a drink, and a trip into the city’s past.

Cole’s PE Buffet in Downtown is proud to be the birthplace of the French Dip sandwich, displaying that bit of trivia on their storefront and inside the restaurant. Cole’s opened in 1908 and still boasts its original glass lighting, penny tile floors, a 40-foot red mahogany bar and historic photos from the location. The sandwiches are amazing, retaining the original recipe after more than a century in business.  It’s a must-see, must-eat experience to enjoy while in Los Angeles.

Downtown’s Golden Gopher is another watering hole with historical value. However, the bar’s owners truly honor the past while staying hip and modern. Their jukebox includes classics from Sinatra as well as indie favorites of today. What’s great about the Gopher is that it feels like you’re stepping back in time.  Their liquor license from 1905, issued by then-president Teddy Roosevelt, is still valid, so in a way it very much is like traveling back in time. Its interior holds many of its vintage original pieces as well.

If you’re looking for cheap hotels in Los Angeles that are close to the city’s historic hot spots, Sea Rock Inn is your best choice.
