2015 CrossFit Games bring over 50,000 people to StubHub Center in Carson
The 2015 Reebok CrossFit Games that begins on Tuesdsay at the StubHub Center in Carson. This is the sixth consecutive year that the six-day event has been held at the center.

The six-day event, held at StubHub Center for the sixth consecutive year, will bring 560 athletes together to participate in high-intensity functional movements.
About 270,000 people from 138 different countries originally signed up for the CrossFit Open, a qualifying stage for the official games. Of those athletes, 40 men, 40 women along with 40 teams of six athletes each, 20 teenage boys, 20 teenage girls and 200 “masters athletes” will compete for their share of the $2 million prize, to be split among the first place winners for each division.
The games kick off Tuesday with masters and teenager competitions. For three days, the fittest athletes under 18 and over 40 will compete in variations of the same events, which include a 50-meter sandbag run, chest-to-bar pullups and deadlifts.
The team and individual competitions will begin Wednesday and continue through the weekend.
Athletes have no idea what physical events they’ll be participating in until game day, said Kyle Waters, assistant general manager at StubHub center.
“There are numerous events and no one knows what they are,” Waters said. “A couple of them have been released, but for the most part, it’s under wraps until you show up for competition time.”
For perspective, Waters said 57 semi trucks filled with weightlifting equipment will be used for this year’s games alone.
A CrossFit enthusiast who competed in the games last year, Waters said the sport will continue to grow because of the variety in the workouts.
“Regardless of who you are, you will always be chasing trying to master the different movements and workouts,” Waters said. “I’m good at a couple of them but terrible at others, so I always have something to work on when working out and trying to stay fit.”
The South Bay stands to benefit from the event — which has nearly tripled over the last five years — as an influx of tourists head this way, Waters said. “People that attend come from all over the world and spend an entire week here in the area. The restaurants, shops and hotels love the event because of the revenue it generates locally,” he said.
